PacBlue Digital, Vancouver's Premier Digital Imaging and Reprographics Company, Converts All Reprographic Paper to Recycled Content

Vancouver BC, July 30, 2008 - PacBlue Digital Imaging, Inc., Vancouver's premier digital imaging and reprographics company, announced that beginning August 1, 2008, it will deliver all reprographics projects on paper containing 30% post-consumer waste.

A printing company aimed at reducing its environmental impact and that of its clients, PacBlue Digital will convert more than 20 million square feet of paper used annually for building plans, engineering drawings, and spec books to recycled paper for its architectural and engineering customers.

"From our building you can see 17 cranes towering over construction projects in downtown Vancouver; each of those projects required pounds and pounds of paper for plans, drawings, and spec books," said Jonathan Colley, President, PacBlue Digital Imaging. "Twenty million square feet of paper is equal to a ribbon one-foot wide that would reach 6,096 kilometres, nearly the full length of the continental US/Canadian border. We will convert all of that to 30% recycled post consumer waste."

While Canadians recycled less than 50% of all paper consumed in 2006, more than 80% of consumers surveyed think that using recycled paper is a high-priority environmental solution, according to a 2007 survey sponsored by Markets Initiative (marketsinitiative.org).

Recycled paper not only reduces solid waste that would end up in landfills but saves water and energy over making paper from virgin fibres:

  • Recycled paper saves 60% of the energy needed to produce virgin paper (Centre for Ecological Technology)
  • Recycled paper generates 95% less air pollution (Centre for Ecological Technology)
  • Recycling of each ton of paper saves 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water (US EPA)

PacBlue Digital, currently working toward their Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification, offers substrates ranging from FSC-certified papers to new Bio-flex 100% biodegradable PVC for banners. In 2007, the company's recycling program diverted nearly 1000 cubic yards of paper cores and cardboard and nearly 475 cubic yards of paper trimmings and cutoffs from land fills.

PacBlue Digital, Owner of Vancouver's First 29-inch "Waterless" Digital Offset Press, Sponsors EPIC Sustainable Living Expo, April 18-20

Vancouver BC, April 2, 2008 - PacBlue Digital Imaging, Inc. - Vancouver's leader in "waterless" printing - today announced its sponsorship of the Vancouver Sun EPIC Sustainable Living Expo, to be held April 18-20, at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre.

A printing company aimed at reducing its environmental impact and that of its clients, PacBlue Digital offers cleaner, more environmentally friendly printing processes, papers, inks, and pigments to buyers concerned about air pollution and the unsustainable use of natural resources such as water and trees.

On February 1, 2008, PacBlue Digital tapped Adam Sealey to be the company's new Coordinator of Sustainability and Green Initiatives. Sealey, an avid outdoorsman and strong environmental advocate who enjoys all forms of water recreation, especially whitewater kayaking, is personally concerned about the use of water in printing production.

"I am very proud that PacBlue Digital offers a printing option that saves water, reduces VOC emissions by over 75%*, and uses far less energy and paper to come up to colour and register," says Sealey. "We see our sponsorship of EPIC as an opportunity to educate the public about ways to reduce water and resource use through sensible choices of paper, inks, and printing processes."

What is "Waterless" Printing?
Traditional offset lithography is based on the principle that oil and water don't mix; using water and other dampening solutions to transfer ink to paper. Waterless printing, a much cleaner process, uses heat to transfer ink to the substrate.

A typical conventional press the size of the waterless press PacBlue Digital runs will use as much as 12,000 litres of water per year, per eight-hour shift. A waterless press, like the KBA 74 Karat, eliminates 98% of the water usage; using water only for clean up.

Other benefits of waterless printing are:

  • Elimination of toxic chemicals such as fountain or dampening solutions making the entire process much more friendly to the environment and pressroom employees.
  • Up to 40% reduction in set up time (known as "make ready") saving hundreds of sheets of paper and the ink and energy traditionally wasted to bring the press up to colour and registration.
  • Improved vibrancy, sharpness, and richness of colour by eliminating delicate ink/water balances in the printing process.
